Un-becoming your old self.

Many of you have seen the Progressive Insurance commercials with Dr. Rick. In these commercials Dr. Rick is attempting to provide all that is necessary to un-become your parents.
When an individual chooses to step over the faith line, or what is known as becoming “born again” / “saved”, then they are declaring that they are putting off their old nature/creation/self, and putting on their new nature/creation/self. In a sense, they are un-becoming their old self.
What does that look like…how does an individual put on and put off? How does one un-become his/her old self while here on this earth? Below is not an exhaustive list of verses or steps…just enough to whet your appetite and get you to want to know what more God has in His word for you.
First, Receive Christ as Savior (this, to the left, is a link for you to show you how you can become saved).

• John 3:3 (NLT) Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
  
• Romans 10:9 (NLT) If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
  
• 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT) This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Secondly, Surrender your life to the Lord.

• Romans 12:1 (NLT) And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.

Lastly, Put Off and Put On.

• Ephesians 4:22-24 (NLT) 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
• 2 Peter 1:3 (NLT) By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.

Are you beginning to see signs of becoming your old self again? Look to God and His Word. The Holy Spirit’s job is to come alongside and help you overcome your old self. This can only happen if you're a genuine child of God. Will you choose to receive Him today if you haven't already?
