Real Dudes,
As some of you may be aware…there are several “I AM” statements throughout God’s Word. Each of them are descriptions of who God is to us in our lives. What stood out to me recently is that there are some “I am your” statements as well. These statements don’t occur as often in God’s Word but God did provide them for us for a reason. One author states that “The phrase ‘I am yours’ indicates a profound declaration of belonging, [and] devotion…signaling that the speaker gives themselves completely to another. It is used to express deep emotional bonds, intense affection, loyalty, or, in some contexts, a desire for a committed relationship.” The first “I am your” statements I want to point out are found in Isaiah 41:10 and Ezekiel 34:31. In both of these verses it is God telling His people that “I AM your God.” Reminding them of His committed relationship with them, and of their committed relationship with Him. The second “I am your” statements I would like to point out are found in 1 Kings 18:36; Psalm 116:16, 125; and 143:12. In these verses we read that God’s people identify themselves with God by saying “I am your servant.” And the last “I am your” statements to consider are found in Revelation 19:10 and 22:9. In these two verses the author states that “I am your fellow servant.” To my fellow servants in-Christ – do you count it an honor for the one and only True God to consider Himself to be your God? As a father I get this. I love being able to say to my daughters that I am your Dad. No other man on this earth gets to claim them…they’re mine, and I am their father. It just blows my mind. Each year on Father’s Day it’s a blessing to receive a card from my daughters. Each of them sign the card and express to me how grateful they are to be a daughter to me. Not only that, but it’s also an unbelievable feeling for them to place themselves in a group and world that no one else knows about. Each one can say “I am your daughter,” and each one can also say to each other that “I am your fellow daughter” or “I am your sister.” No one can ever change that in our family. I will always be their dad, they will always be my daughters, and they will always be sisters to each other. Men, let me ask you this – What does it mean to you for the one and only true God to call Himself your God? Isn’t it nice to hear that reminder every once in a while? I know I just sent out a devotional on this not too long ago, but the Psalmist in Psalm 35:3 cries out to God, “Say to me, ‘I am your salvation.’” The Psalmist knew that God isn’t just God, but he also longed to be reminded that God is His salvation as well. What does it mean to you that you get to call yourself His servant? And what does it mean to you to have fellow servants that you can share life with and each of you can serve God together? Take some time to think about what the phrase “I am your” means to you. If you’re not sure what it looks like to be a servant of God, then I’ve provided you with a couple links below to help clarify that for you.
