Return to Give Thanks

Luke 17:11-19 (CSB)
Ten Men Healed
11 While traveling to Jerusalem, he passed between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten men with leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

14 When he saw them, he told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And while they were going, they were cleansed.

15 But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God. 16 He fell facedown at his feet, thanking him. And he was a Samaritan.

17 Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Didn’t any return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And he told him, “Get up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.”

I’d like to leave each of us with…
*Three Observations about Giving Thanks…from Luke 17:11-19:
  • 17:11-12a
    • 11 While traveling to Jerusalem, he passed between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten men with leprosy met him.
    • The FIRST Observation is that Jesus met these lepers where they were.
      • Apantaw…met (BDAG, pp. 96-97) “meet…someone.”
      • You can call it…Divine providence or Divine intervention…He didn’t just stumble into this town or across this group of lepers…this event aligned with His will. He intervened to show His love and care, and to continue to make His name famous. Vv. 15, 18…to give God glory. That was the purpose of all ailments and healing.
      • Much like seeking forgiveness…Both are on the way to meet with each other.
  • 17:12b-13
    • They stood at a distance 13 and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
    • The SECOND Observation is that the lepers acknowledge Him for who He is and what He’s capable of.
      • In a community where they were shunned, kept at distance, despised by man, and taught to believe that they were this way because they were cursed by God…that they were being punished by God. They didn’t express anger or displeasure towards Him…in fact, they requested His mercy…the withholding of a punishment which they did deserve.
      • Notice, they didn’t shout the typical leper statement of “Unclean, Unclean.” But rather, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”
      • They weren’t warning Him to stay back, they were welcoming and inviting Him in.
      • He saw / acknowledged them too…vs. 14 When He saw them.
  • 17:14-19
    • 14 When he saw them, he told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And while they were going, they were cleansed.
  • The THIRD/& LAST Observation is that few people return to express thanks to Him for answered prayer.
  • How many were healed out of the ten? All of them.
  • How many returned to thank God for healing? One.
    • Side Note: It was the Priests who diagnosed these individuals with their disease…I wonder what they thought when these men returned to them being healed of this incurable disease.
  • How did God bless the one who returned?  Because of his faith, he was saved…not just cleaned on the outside but on the inside as well. Nine out of the ten men only wanted the miracle…one wanted complete restoration, physically and spiritually. His prayer was answered to the fullest.
  • Conclusion: I don’t know what you need to come and meet with Jesus about, but let me encourage you to fully acknowledge Him in your prayers (Our Father Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name), and acknowledge when He does answer your prayers. If He answers them, then come back and thank Him. Don’t just be in it for the miracles…be in it because you believe. Never forget to return and show your gratitude towards Him. How sad it must be for the Lord to have only 10% return and express their gratitude for what He’s done in their life. Lastly, it can be easy to remember to thank Him when big requests are answered, but remember to thank Him for the small requests getting answered too (times you run an errand in town; times your child takes the car to go to practice and you prayed for his/her safety; etc.).
    • AND, if you know God has answered prayer in someone else’s life…then encourage them to return and thank Him as well.

God – my Provider and Protector.

Real Dudes,
The other day I was watching the show Mountain Men and one of the men (Tom) on the show had just cut a tree down…his plan was to make a canoe out of it. Once he had the tree down, the first thing he did was peel all of the bark off of it. I was curious…why take the bark off and what purpose does bark have for a tree if it’s not needed once the tree is down? That might be obvious to some of you, but for me, I look at a tree and see the bark, but have never put much thought into its entire purpose. In my research, I found that bark serves a couple purposes:
  • It Provides
    • Shelter for some animals
    • Food source for some animals
    • Supports a wide range of different species
    • Biodiversity in a forest
    • Insulation for the tree
    • The pores help the tree breathe
  • It Protects the Tree from…
    • The Elements
    • Fungal infections
    • Destructive insects, birds, and mammals
    • Losing moisture

And I also found the reasons for peeling the bark off when building a house or canoe…
  • Allows the wood to dry out consistently.
  • Provides an opportunity to remove any unwanted guests that will want to make their home in between the bark and the rest of the wood.

As was noted above, Provision and Protection are two main purposes for bark. Much like bark wrapped around a tree, I feel it comforting to know that God has wrapped each of us in His constant provision and protection for us. Many benefits come from feeling provided for and protected from outside influences. How have you noticed the Lord providing for you in your life? What is it that you’ve noticed Him protecting you from? Below are some passages to reflect on and to see Him as your Provider and Protector. Spend some time today thanking Him for Who He is, and for what He does for you. If you don’t have God in your life, then what effects are you experiencing from being exposed?

  • God is my Provider.
    • Genesis 22:13-14 (NASB) Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by its horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering in the place of his son. And Abraham named that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

    • 2 Samuel 22:1-4 (GNT)
1 When the Lord saved David from Saul and his other enemies, David sang this song to the Lord:
2 The Lord is my protector;
    he is my strong fortress.
3 My God is my protection,
and with him I am safe.
He protects me like a shield;
he defends me and keeps me safe.
He is my savior;
he protects me and saves me from violence.
4 I call to the Lord,
and he saves me from my enemies.
Praise the Lord!

Adopting the Attitudes of Christ

11/12/2024

Men,
Each day we’re faced with differing attitudes. Attitudes in person, in song, in social media, in entertainment, in the workplace, in the home, etc. And each day we’re faced with a decision of what attitudes we’ll adopt. Who and or what are we allowing to influence our attitude development? The answer should be obvious. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Philippians 2:5 (CSB) that we are to “
Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.”

When I typed in “What are some attitudes of Christ” here’s what AI spit out…
  • Some of the attitudes of Christ include:
  • Selflessness: Jesus gave up his divine privileges and took on the role of a slave. He put others before himself.
  • Humility: Jesus humbled himself in obedience to God.
  • Compassion: Jesus had compassion on people who sinned.
  • Patience: Jesus showed unlimited patience.
  • Forgiveness: Jesus forgave everyone.
  • Truthfulness: Jesus told the truth all the time.
  • Rejoicing: Jesus rejoiced in the Lord.
  • Prayer: Jesus prayed about everything.
  • Non-retaliation: Jesus did not retaliate or make threats, even when he was ridiculed or abused.
  • Non-entitlement: Jesus did not have a sense of entitlement.
  • Servanthood: Jesus served others.
This isn’t an exhaustive list…I’m sure other attitudes of His come to mind as you’re reading this.
My challenge to each of us is to ask ourselves when we act a certain way, “Where did this attitude come from?” “Where did I learn it from?” Let me encourage you to spend some time in His Word and look for attitudes of Christ. What did you learn from Him as you were reading and how can you apply that to your life? Would others say that it’s obvious as to where you learned your attitudes from? Would it be said that you learned and adopted them from Christ? My prayer is that those around us could get a glimpse of Jesus just by observing our attitudes. What message are they receiving?
Practicing His Presence,
Nate
