Ask like it's your first time asking… “Lord, what do You want me to do?”

Real Dudes,

Why are we at times afraid to ask God a question?

Could it be that we fear what His response might be?

Could it be because we already know what the answer is going to be and we’re not ready to commit to carrying through with His answer/response?

Does the following question come easy or hard for you to ask…

Honey, I was looking for something to do today, is there anything that I can help you with?

Maybe in your first year of marriage that was a common and easy question to ask, but compare that to being several years into your marriage, do you dare ask, or do you still ask with the same sincerity?

What if she says, “Yes, please help me with the dishes, the vacuuming, the laundry, etc.”

Are you prepared for her response? Or would you feel better to have never asked in the first place?

And by not asking, then do you somehow feel less responsible and less interruptible?

Saul, soon to be known as the Apostle Paul asks this question on the road to Damascus in Acts 9:6 (NKJV)

So he [the Apostle Paul immediately following giving his life to the Lord], trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

Paul asked a loaded question, but he was prepared to surrender to whatever the response was going to be. For the first time in his life his allegiance was to someone other than himself or other authorities. His old self was left behind and in an instance behold all things became new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

How did God respond to Paul’s question? Did He give him a laundry list of things to do? Since other followers were slacking in carrying through with their responsibilities, did God give up on them and expect Paul to take it all on himself?

Not at all. God didn’t overwhelm him…He gave him one task at a time. He said, first “Arise, and go.” Then, “you will be told what you must do,” next.” One baby step, one task at a time. The Lord didn’t give him more than he could handle…He gave him just enough in order to help build his trust and confidence in the Lord.

Let me ask you this, when was the last time you asked God, what do You want me to do?

Are you prepared to surrender to whatever His response is? Or are you more prone to resorting back to fulfilling the desires of the flesh?

So my challenge to each of us is this…Ask like it's your first time asking… “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
It doesn’t matter if you’re a day into being a follower of Christ or thirty years into following Him. Do you still carry that same sincerity and passion as when you first gave your life to Him?

What's one area that the Church can improve on?

I watched this video not too long ago (see the link below). Absolutely worth my time. Something was pointed out that I think we can all work to improve on in our lives and in our churches. In this video Jelly Roll explains how the church left a bad taste in his mouth from a very young age. At about the 10:56 mark, Jelly was asked, “What could the church have done better to 14 year old Jelly Roll?...What did we get wrong? What did we miss? How can we get it right?” Jelly replied with this answer, “The biggest thing…I think [would have to be] patience…give them grace, meet them where they are, because that’s what the Word does. The Word meets us exactly where we are, all we got to do is open it and He’ll do the rest.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A0Fk7hf4cw

Are you allowing Him to do the rest?

2 Peter 3:9 (NASB) The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

Ephesians 4:2 (NLT) Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.

Men...is patience something that you know you need to work on? If so, then take some time to ask the Lord to help you in this area. And ask an accountability partner to keep you in check as well. Having enough self-control to implement patience will provide multiple rewards and friendships. Let’s all work on being patient towards others, as He is proven to be patient with us over and over again.

What is it that God has put in place to help guard our hearts and minds?

Please consider the following questions…Where is your mind at today? Is it in a state of unrest? Is it consumed with something unhealthy? Does it feel like it’s influenced by anything and everyone other than God? If so, then what is it in the verses below that WILL protect / be a safeguard for your mind?

Heart / Mind…these two words are often used interchangeably and synonymously in Scripture:
- Philippians 4:7 (NLT) Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
- Isaiah 26:3 (CSB) You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.
- Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
